In a recent session of our Digital Media Marketing class, Wendy Greenwood welcomed two distinguished George Brown College alumni, Marquis Richards and Stephanie Lee, both of whom have forged unique paths in their professional journeys. They shared their invaluable digital marketing experience and wisdom. Their insights not only illuminated the complexities of navigating the job market but also provided actionable advice to improve our chances of success in the field.

Marquis Richards: Be the "Purple Cow"

Marquis Richards, currently an Account Coordinator at Aber Group, shared his journey from wanting to be a veterinarian to developing a passion for math and statistics. He also gave us tips on how we should network to get our internships and break through this competitive market. Marquis emphasized on the quote “Be the purple cow” which is a reference to a book he received from his guest teacher. The book refers to coming up with business strategies to help you stand out from your competition. Ultimately the sad truth is, while we all are classmates right now, when we're in the job market we all are competitors.

So how can one stand out in this competitive market?

  • Learn and utilize LinkedIn- Marquis stressed the significance of leveraging LinkedIn as a powerful professional networking platform. Creating a compelling profile, engaging with industry content, and actively connecting with professionals in your field

  • Seize all opportunities that come- In a competitive market, being proactive is essential. Actively seek and seize opportunities, whether they are internships, networking events, or industry seminars

  • Groups and events- Joining relevant groups and attending industry events can provide a platform for networking and staying updated on industry trends.

  • Prepare and reach out- Preparation is key when reaching out to professionals for networking or potential opportunities. Research individuals or companies thoroughly, understand their work, and have a clear message about what you seek.

Stephanie Lee: Choose your role and expertise

Stephanie Lee, currently a media planner at WaveMaker, imparted valuable lessons from her transition from political science to marketing, detailing her experiences during the co-op program and offering guidance on securing Co-op placements. Stephanie's advice on deciding between general roles across industries or a more specific focus resonated with me, prompting thoughtful consideration for aligning my career goals with either a versatile or niche professional path.

Personally, I'm on board with the idea of going for general roles across different industries. Even with over 2 years of marketing experience, I believe it's crucial not to be too selective and to be open to any opportunity that comes our way. Breaking into the Canadian market isn't a walk in the park, and the pressure can be quite overwhelming. Staying flexible might just be the key to navigating through these challenges in a competitive job market. I've outlined the upsides and downsides of opting for general roles below.

Pros

  • Diverse Skill Application: General roles across different industries may allow you to apply your skills in various contexts, broadening your skill set and adaptability.

  • Exploration of Interests: You can explore different industries, gaining exposure to various sectors and discovering where your passion and skills align best.

  • Wider Job Market: Casting a broader net increases the number of potential job opportunities, increasing your chances of securing a position.

  • Overlooked Opportunities: General jobs and internships are sometimes overlooked, but they can provide valuable foundational experiences. It's essential not to dismiss them solely for a perceived lack of specificity.

Cons:

  • Less Specialized Expertise: General roles may not allow you to deeply specialize in a particular niche, potentially limiting your expertise in a specific area.

The speakers imparted invaluable lessons during our session, emphasizing the significance of maintaining a positive outlook in the job search and showcasing genuine passion for our chosen field. Demonstrating enthusiasm signals to hiring managers shows our commitment to putting in effort and continual learning. In this competitive landscape, where technical skills often align, the intangible qualities of positivity and passion can set candidates apart. Inspired by their advice, I've decided to start utilizing and optimizing LinkedIn to expand my professional network and enhance visibility. Additionally, I'll stop taking 'no' personally, recognizing that rejection is a part of the journey, and being too picky might hinder potential opportunities. These adjustments in my approach align with the speakers' valuable insights, providing a more proactive and resilient stance in my job search endeavours.

I also learnt valuable lessons about effective networking, including the significance of making a memorable first impression, as emphasized by Stephanie Lee's quote, "You'll never get another first impression with someone." This highlights the importance of customizing and sending personalized invitations, demonstrating a genuine interest in building meaningful connections. Additionally, the speakers emphasized the proactive approach to networking, stressing the need to take initiative in reaching out, participating in industry events, and leveraging platforms like LinkedIn to actively engage with professionals in the field.

In conclusion, the insights shared by Marquis Richards and Stephanie Lee resonate as guiding lights in navigating the complexities of the digital media marketing landscape. Their practical advice on networking, staying flexible in career choices, and maintaining a positive outlook serve as invaluable tools for success in the competitive job market.
